James Thomas Harris
Only Soldier From Williamson Killed in Vietnam War
Lance Corporal James Thomas Harris, who was from Williamson, was the only person from this small community killed in the Vietnam War. Those who grew up with and were with him in school, remember Harris as a, “warm and kind person.”
Born on December 18, 1947, Harris joined the U.S. Marine Corps during the height of the Vietnam War. He was a LCPL in the 3rd Marines Rifle Division and was stationed in the Quang Tri area of South Vietnam.
He was killed by an explosive device only two days after he turned 19 years old. The young man died on December 20, 1966. Harris’ body was returned to Williamson and is buried in the Providence First Baptist Church Cemetery there.
For his service protecting the freedoms we enjoy today, LCPL Harris was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Purple Heart and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He is also honored on the Vietnam Wall in Washington, DC, Panel 13e, Line 63.
The Honor our KIA committee and a grateful GS Community will honor our Hometown Hero by installing a plaque in Griffin.
