James A. Cottingham
Died the Same Day He Joined Army
James A. Cottingham was born in 1878. He was 40 years old when he reported to begin his service on July 3, 1918, at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He died that same day of a heart attack.
His wife, Mrs. Callie Cottingham, who lived at 704 Tinsley Street, was notified of his death. It is not known where Private Cottingham is buried. Although Private Cottingham did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War I, hero.
An individual plaque honoring James A. Cottingham will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District sponsored by Petro South.
