Brother Lived in Griffin
A.A. Haynes’ brother, Emory H. Haynes, was born just before the turn of the century, in 1897.Emory would join the U.S. Army twice. The first time was to fight Poncho Villa along the Mexican border in El Paso, Texas. Haynes would join again to serve his country in World War I.The veteran of two battle fronts would meet his untimely death along train tracks.Army private Haynes crossed and did not hear the shrill whistle of the oncoming boxcars.Emory H. Haynes died on May 16, 1917.
Although Haynes did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War I soldier.An individual plaque honoring Emory H. Haynes will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District sponsored by Petro South.
