Cecil Ray Moon

Died of Blood Poisoning in WWI

Cecil Ray Moon was born at Brooks Station in Fayette County on August 31 1895. He and his family would later move to Griffin. Enlisting in the U.S. Army on April 26, 1918, Private Moon would serve his country less than two months. Moon would contract Septicemia (blood poisoning) in his left shoulder and would die while serving in the military on June 17, 1918.His mother, Lavonia Viola McKneely Moon, who lived at 109 Randall Street in Griffin, was notified of her son’s death. His father, LaFayette Plato Moon, was dead. Private Moon left behind his mother, two brothers and two sisters.

Cecil Ray Moon’s body was returned to his hometown Griffin and was buried in the Moon Family Cemetery in Zetella. Although Moon did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War 1, soldier.

An individual plaque honoring Cecil Ray Moon will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District honoring the dedicated work done by Reporter Ray Lightner and the Griffin Daily News staff honoring these our GS Hometown Heroes.
