James Franklin Posey

Supported His Mother and Sister

Army Private James Franklin Posey had the responsibility of supporting his mother and sister at the young age of only 16 years old. Born on September 28, 1894, Posey joined the U.S. Army when he was 23. Perhaps it was to provide a better life to his family. But sadly, a little more than a year after he joined the army, Posey was dead. Killed by tuberculosis on October 14, 1918. Apparently the Spanish Flu had claimed another victim. It is not known how his mother, Mary Armstrong Moone, who lived along RFD 8, Box 66, Griffin survived after that.

Posey is buried in the Moon Family Cemetery in Zetella. Although Posey did not come home alive, a grateful community now honors the World War I, soldier.

An individual plaque honoring Phillips will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District sponsored by a generous anonymous donor who believes Griffin and Spalding County is a great community to work, live and play.
