Charles Lucurie Shedd

Enlisted Years Before WW1

When he was 17 years old, Charles Lucurie Shedd enlisted in the U.S. Army. Born on May 13, 1897, Shedd was a private and reported to Columbus, Ohio for training. When the U.S. became involved in World War 1, Shedd was sent overseas to France. This is where he was Killed in Action on September 27, 1918.

His mother and father, Mary and J. Randolph Shedd, who lived at 311 East Broad Street, were notified of their son’s death. His body was first buried overseas in Bois de Vinguelles, France, near the Argonne Forest.He was later buried and memorialized in Griffin’s Oak Hill Cemetery.

Although Private Shedd did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War I, hero. An individual plaque honoring Charles Lucurie Shedd will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District sponsored by Petro South.
