U.S. Army Private First Class Edmond R. Chapman was born on June 9, 1921. He was 21 years old when he reported to begin his service on November 18, 1942, at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He was assigned to the 134th Infantry Division and would go to France to fight the Germans in World War 2.

Heading overseas in June, 1944, Chapman would be declared Missing in Action on July 23, 1944, a month after he had begun to fight. Later the War Department would declare him Killed in Action on the same date. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. L.E. Chapman, who lived at 213 West Cherry Street in Griffin, received the tragic news of their son’s death. Chapman had three sisters. He is buried in the Tazwell Cemetery located in Buena Vista, Georgia (near Columbus).

Edmond Chapman may not have returned home alive but a grateful community now honors the Hometown Hero. An individual plaque will be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin. The plaque is sponsored by Gordon College.
