Killed in Battle of Iwo Jima

Lloyd E. Edwards was born on December 3, 1925. The U.S. Marine Corps private would find himself fighting alongside other Marines to capture the island of Iwo Jima. The 36-day battle to take the island, would become of the most brutal battles in World War 2. A total of 21,000 Japanese were estimated to have died in the Battle of Iwo Jima. American casualties totaled 6,800. Edwards was listed as killed in action on March 12, 1945, two weeks before the end of the siege. His father, John H. Edwards, was notified of his son’s death.

Edwards’ body was returned to the United States and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Although the US Marine Corps Private did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War II, soldier. Edwards will be honored with an individual plaque to be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin. The plaque is sponsored by the Edwards Family.
