Wyley Hoyt Hand
An Older Soldier Among Young Men
When Wyley Hoyt Hand joined the U.S. Army on November 24, 1943, he was older than many of the young soldiers. Hand was a 31-year-old Private First Class.
As part of the 329th Infantry, Wyley Hand was born on December 12, 1912.
Not much more is known about the soldier who is listed along with others on the World War II, monument in Veterans Memorial Park. He attended grammar school and worked in Griffin in the textile mills. He and his wife Lucile Bass Hand had one child.
Hand died in service on December 28, 1944, toward the end of the war. He had just turned 32 years old.
PFC Hand is burned in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in nearby Woolsey, GA.
