Robert Lewis Stephens
Service Station Attendant Fought in Africa
Robert Lewis Stephens was born in Lamar County on January 21, 1920. His mother, Mrs. Gertrude Stephens lived at 112 Blanton Avenue, Griffin. A.B. Farland owned a service station where young Robert worked as an attendant prior to his military service.
Robert served with the 357th Engineering Corps in the U.S. Army. Not much is known of his service, however. We do know that Private Stephens was killed in action in North Africa on May 11, 1944. He is buried in Carthage, Tunisia, North Africa.
