Private Rufus Jack Thompson joined the U.S. Army on November 24, 1943. He was assigned to the 106th Division of the 424th Infantry.
Growing up in Griffin at 1001 W. Slaton Avenue, Thompson had an aunt, Mrs. A.F. (Clyde) Henderson, who lived at 121 W. Chappell Street.
Before he began his military service to his country, Thompson worked at Kincaid Mills #1.
The young soldier was killed in action on January 13, 1945 and is buried in the American Cemetery at Henri-Chapelle, Belgium.
