Samuel Leon Cook

Grew up Along 13th Street-Griffin

Born in 1920 and growing up at 124 N. 13th Street, Griffin, Samuel Leon Cook had a grammar school education. Working in textiles, Samuel was the son of Charlie and Effie Cook. He had four sisters. The family would later move to 334 Ellis Road.

Cook joined the U.S. Army on November 23, 1942, and was sworn in at Ft. McPherson. He was a private in the 7th Division of the 184th Infantry.

Not much is known about the military service of Private Cook, but what we do know is that he apparently served in the South Pacific and fought the Japanese during the war. Cook died on November 4, 1944, just before the war ended. He is buried at Ft. McKinley in Manila, Philippines. For his service and bravery Cook received both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
