Willie L. Mallory
One Well Dressed Soldier
Army PrivateWillie L. Mallory, lived in Griffin along 15th Street. The 1900 Census lists the five-year-old and his family as, “boarders.” Today we use the term, renter(s). Born on January 6, 1895, Mallory, as you can see from his picture, was a, “well dressed man.” As he changed his coat and tie for an army uniform, Mallory would serve in the army only two months. Another soldier to succumb to disease that hunted him down in the earthen trenches of France. Private Mallory was pronounced dead on April 9, 1919.
His body was returned to his hometown Griffin and was buried in one of the first plots of Oak Hill Cemetery.Although Mallory did not come home alive, a community now honors the World War Isoldier.
An individual plaque honoring Willie Mallory will be installed in Griffin’s Historic District sponsored by an anonymous donor who is proud of these our Griffin-Spalding County Hometown Heroes.
