Albert T. “Tag” Chapman

Albert T. “Tag” Chapman was a sergeant in the newly formed Army-Air Corps. He flew with the 23rd Bomber Squadron fighting the Japanese in the Pacific.  The radio operator on the B-24 Liberator Bomber, was born on October 23, 1924. Chapman worked at the Henderson Foundry in Hampton before entering the service.

Only 20 years old, Chapman was killed in action and declared missing in action on November 16, 1944. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. A.T. Chapman were notified of their son’s death.

A memorial to honor “Tag” Chapman’s is located in the Philippines. He also has memorial markers at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia and Berea Cemetery, Hampton.

Tag Chapman may not have returned home alive but a grateful community now honors the Hometown Hero. An individual plaque will be installed in Historic Downtown Griffin. The plaque is sponsored by Walter Jones, Jr.
